Nominations for the 97th Academy Awards have been delayed following deadly wildfires in the Los Angeles area.
The nominations for the 97th Academy Awards have finally been revealed, after two delays due to the devastating wildfires that swept through Southern California.
Wildfires aren’t over yet with a new blaze, the Hughes Fire, burning north of Los Angeles this week.
But nominations continued as scheduled Thursday, with the divisive, experimental musical Emilia Perez getting the most nods.
One of her 13 nominations was history-making: Carla Sofia Gascon became the first transgender woman to win the Best Actress award.
She plays a former cartel boss in the film who secretly undergoes gender-affirmation surgery and reinvents herself as a philanthropist in modern-day Mexico.
But her category will be the hottest to watch, with a tough competition between The Substance’s Demi Moore and Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres of the historical drama I’m Still Here.
Scoring another 10 Oscars was the Broadway blockbuster Wicked, signaling a strong year for Hollywood musicals. The Brutalist, a period drama about an architect who survives the Holocaust and moves to America, also earned 10 nominations.
Other Academy favorites this year were the Vatican Drama Conclave and the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, both of which earned eight nods. Another six nominations went to the zany comedy-drama Anura, about a stripper who marries the son of a Russian oligarch.
Some of the biggest misses came in the crowded Best Actress category, with Mariah’s Angelina Jolie, Baby Girl’s Nicole Kidman and Emilia Perez’s Selena Gomez all left out in the cold.
But a surprise came in the form of a nomination for Romanian-American actor Sebastian Stan, who won recognition for his portrayal of United States President Donald Trump in The Apprentice, a cutting portrait of ambition and ego.
