US justice department tells prosecutors to drop Eric Adams case

The US Department of Justice has asked prosecutors to leave corruption cases against New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

In a memo viewed by the BBC’s US news fellow CBS, Acting Deputy Attorney General Emal Bow, appointed by President Donald Trump, directed the federal prosecutor in the southern district of New York to Eliminate the case.

Adams were charged in September for five charges of bribery, conspiracy and violations of the election campaign. He has requested not to be guilty.

It is alleged that as mayor, Turkish traders and an official have been accused of accepting thousands of dollars of luxury travel benefits and accepting thousands of dollars in exchange for their influence.

Prosecutors have not yet pointed out whether they intend to leave the case according to the request. Any decision to do so will need to be formally presented to the court and approved by the judge.

The memo said after a meeting between Adams lawyers and federal prosecutors in New York.

Adams, a Democrat, have recently moved forward to build close ties with Trump and his administration. He attended the presidential opening last month and left for Florida for a meeting. Adams have also said that the city is cooperating with immigration raids.

However, he has said that he has not talked to President Trump about his corruption.
