US cautions citizens: Avoid travel to Pakistan over terror risks

Islamabad – The United States has updated its travel advisory for Pakistan, and urged US citizens to consider visiting the country because of the increasing threat of terrorism and potentially armed conflict. The US Department of State issued the warning on Friday, highlighting security concerns in regions like Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where extremist groups remain active and remove the attacks.

“Terrorism and violence by extremist elements have led to indiscriminate attacks on civilians as well as local soldiers and police targets,” the advice states. It further warns that “terrorists can attack with little or no warnings, targeting transport centers, markets, shopping malls, military installations, airports, universities, tourist focus, schools, hospitals, synagogues and government facilities.”

The consultation noted that in the past, US diplomat and diplomatic facilities have been targeted in Pakistan. Due to the permanent security threats, the US government imposes travel restrictions on its personnel in Pakistan, which requires special permission for movement outside Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. The government has the limited potential to help US citizens in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Pakistan -administered Azad Kashmir, and remote areas.

The latest warning is after violent incidents in Pakistan, including recent suicide bombings in Bannu District, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including five soldiers, killing 18 people. The attack was one of many people who have played an important role in the country’s deteriorating security situation.

The index of terror is growing

In February 2025, the US Embassy in Islamabad issued a security alert citing credible threats against the decisions, when videos allegedly showed their presence in the courtyard of the mosque to the Tahrik Talban Pakistan (TTP) and the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group. In response, the embassy stopped US employees from going to the site and advised citizens to avoid large gatherings and leave unsafe places immediately.

Pakistan has recently risked second in the 2025 World Terrorism Index (GTI), which reflects the increase in violence across the country. According to a 2024 GTI report, Pakistan suffered 1,099 terrorist attacks last year, resulting in 1,081 deaths – which has increased by 45 % over the previous year. The deaths associated with TTP attacks have doubled since 2023.

Apart from the threat of terrorism, the US advisory warned that political demonstrations and protests in Pakistan need official permits, and that the participants can attract the scrutiny of security forces. Some US citizens have been detained for participating in the protest or distributing content of Pakistani authorities on social media. Advisory also noted that Internet and mobile services often interfere with interruptions, especially during unrest periods.

Although Islamabad benefits from better security infrastructure and emergency reaction capabilities, other parts of the country face severe limits to dealing with crises. The consultation emphasized that Pakistan’s security environment can often change rapidly without a warning.

Given these risks, the US Department of State strictly advises its citizens to inform, be careful, and as long as it is necessary to review the journey to Pakistan.
