Two people were arrested on Friday in connection with a major New Year fireworks explosion in Honollo, Hawaii, killing at least three people and injuring two dozen.
The Honollo Police Department identified the suspects as a man and a woman. Police said on Facebook that they were accused of endangering the welfare of a minor, endangering carelessness and “numerous firearms crimes”.
More arrests are expected, police said. No additional details were provided.
According to police, the explosion occurred 3 miles west of the Fort Shafter during New Year’s celebrations when someone illuminated “Airial Cake” – a combination of multiple air fireworks cartridges that match the sheet cake. The “cake” then fell aside and rockets into the crates of extra pyriotics, which broke out.
Videos posted on social media by neighbors show a rapid burst around the house.
Two women were declared dead at the scene and the third woman died at the hospital. The victims have not been identified.
Twenty -six others were taken to the hospital, some of whom were severely burned. According to Sunny Johnson, a paramedic supervisor of the Honollo Emergency Medical Services, who spoke at a news conference after the incident, there may be additional injured victims who left before arriving at the scene of emergency services.
