Turkiye detains nine journalists over protests against Istanbul mayor’s arrest, union says – World

Turkish journalist Union said Monday that Turkish authorities have detained nine journalists who have covered protests overnight in several cities against the arrest of Istanbul’s Mayor Akim Amoglo.

It was not immediately clear why journalists were detained.

On Sunday, a Turkish court sent President Tayyip Erdogan’s central political rival, Istanbul’s Mayor, Amloglo, who mobilized the country’s largest protests in more than a decade under corruption charges.

Despite the ban on road gatherings in many cities, most of the peaceful government protests took place on Sunday for the fifth night.

The central opposition has been demanding a protest against the judicial decision on the Republican People’s Party (CHP), which they call politics and undemocratic.

The government denies that the investigations are politically active and they say the courts are free.

Amogloo has denied the allegations that he faces as “incredible accusations and the cylinders” and has demanded nationwide protests.

In a speech in a protest in Saracha district of Istanbul in front of the municipality building, CHP leader Ozgur Ozil said on Sunday that he would continue to protest until the release of Amoglo.
