Premier Chow Jung Tai said on Wednesday, “The Taiwanese government will soon consider whether it needs to help President Donald Trump’s risk of imposing taxes on semiconductors.”

The world’s largest contract chipmaker, the home of the Taiwan semiconductor manufacturing company (TSMC), is an important link to global technology supply chain for companies like Apple and NVIDIA.

Trump said on Monday that he plans to impose imports on imported chips, pharmaceuticals and steel so that producers can be made in the United States.

Responding to a question on Trump’s remarks, Chu said that the Ministry of Economy and other departments have paid close attention to the “progress of the past”.

“In a day or two, we will immediately see if we need to create more cooperative projects for the industrial sector and future aid programs,” he added. “I want to assure my compatriots that Taiwan’s status in the industrial series of the world will not be ignored, and we will maintain such a benefit.”

Chu added that Taiwan has to continue the struggle for further cooperation and maintain its leadership in the industrial and technical sectors.

In 2020, under the first Trump administration, the TSMC announced that it would set up a $ 12 billion factory in Arizona for the US government’s efforts to wrestle tech supply chains globally. Later, he increased the projects in which the total investment is now $ 65 billion.

TSMC has refused to comment on Trump’s latest tariff remarks.

This month, Taiwan’s Minister of Economy Koo Jiaoi said he had a slight impact on any tax imposed by Trump on semiconductor exports only in view of his technical superiority.

In another possible challenge for Taiwan, Trump instructed federal agencies last week to investigate US trade deficit and unfair trade methods and alleged currency manipulation through other countries.

Taiwan’s trade surplus with the United States increased by 83 % over 2023 last year, exports to the United States hit a record $ 111.4 billion by demanding high -tech products like semidicators.
