Spring sports roundup: Hewitt-Trussville runs baseball record to 16-0

The Hewitt-Trussville baseball team ran its record to 16-0 with a pair of dominant wins this week – an 8-0 shutout of Springville at home on Thursday and a 12-1 rout in 5 innings at Helena on Wednesday.

The Huskies pushed across 5 runs in the third inning against Springville (11-2) with a Drew Ollis single driving in 3 runs. Jonah Jackson drove in a run with a triple and another run crossed the plate on a passed ball.

Hewitt’s Blake Bales also had an RBI with his single in the bottom of the second inning. Jackson and Ollis had a pair of RBIs in the game.

Starter Hudson Mitchell earned the win, shutting out the Tigers on 4 hits. He struck out a batter and walked 2. Carter Samuelson took the loss, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits with a strikeout and 2 walks over 2 innings.

Alex Holland, Grant Martinez, Ryan King and Kevin Jones had hits for Springville.

The Huskies pounded out 16 hits in the 5-inning rout of Helena on the road on Wednesday. Hewitt-Trussville scored 5 runs in the top of the first inning, added 2 in the third, 4 in the fifth and another run in the fifth. Helena scored its run in the bottom of the opening inning.

Hewitt got four doubles on the day – from Colby Durden, Cooper Huffman, Cam Simpson and Steele Hall. Huffman was 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Simpson went 3-for-4 with an RBI and 2 runs, Kale McIntosh was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs, Christian Helmers went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Ollis was 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs and Durden drove in 2 runs.

Helmers earned the win, allowing an earned run on 3 hits with 5 strikeouts and a walk.

Leadoff hitter Brett Cannon went 1-for-3 for Helena. Nick Peters doubled in 2 at-bats and Davis Kelley was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Brayden Dockery took the loss, allowing 11 runs – 8 earned – on 13 hits with 5 strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Reliever Austin Acosta gave up an earned run on 3 hits with a strikeout and 3 walks.

Bob Jones 4, Christ Presbyterian (Tenn.) 3

University of Alabama commitment and reigning Class 7A Hitter of the Year Zack Johnson had a walk-off RBI single to lift Bob Jones over Christ Presbyterian Academy of Nashville on Wednesday at Robertsdale High School. The Patriots split a pair of games on Wednesday, losing 10-1 no-hitter against Green Hill of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.

In the win over CPA, Johnson went 3-for-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Leadoff hitter Myles Hammonds was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Mason Rinehart was 2-for-2 with a run scored and Cole Spanier was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Tanner Hermesch struck out 10 to pick up a 6-hit complete game win for Bob Jones. Hermesch allowed 3 earned runs and walked a batter.

Green Hill’s Braden Serbin pitched 6 no-hitting innings and Liam Bowles capped off the gem with an inning of no-hit ball to beat the Patriots, who rested their starters for the game. Serbin struck out 7 and walked 5 and allowed an earned run to score.

Logan Barney had a triple for the Hawks, Serbin also went 2-for-4 with an RBI and Jackson Crawford was 1-for-2 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored. Jackson Hines had a double.

Reliever Ryan Leahy took the loss, allowing 10 runs – 6 earned – on 7 hits with a strikeout and 4 walks. Starter Jack Revera allowed a hit with 2 strikeouts and a walk in 4 innings.

On Tuesday, the Patriots blanked a pair of Tennessee opponents at Foley High School, shutting out both St. George’s Independent of Collierville and Walker Valley of Cleveland.

In the 9-0 win over St. George’s, Bob Jones got four doubles on the way to 10 hits and a pair of pitchers combined to allow 2 hits.

Camden Martin earned the win – and helped himself by going 2-for-3 with a double with an RBI – allowing a hit with 3 strikeouts over 4 innings. The senior also walked a batter. Elijah Degante worked 2 innings, allowing a hit with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks.

Johnson went 2-for-3 with a double, Robert Chatmon doubled in 3 at-bats and Dill Adkins was 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Reece Brazeal, Spanier and Grayson Dennis had an RBI apiece in the win.

In an 11-0 win over Walker Valley, Bob Jones hitters pounded out 14 hits – with 7 extra-base hits – and sophomore Graham Segraves earned the 5-inning complete-game win with a 2-hitter. Segraves struck out 6 and walked 1.

Chatmon went 2-for-3 with a triple and 2 runs scored. Hermesch doubled in his only official at-bat and scored twice. Johnson had a pair of doubles in 3 at-bats, leadoff hitter Adkins was 3-for-4 with 4 RBIs, a double and 2 runs score. Drake Barbee was 1-for-1 with a double and a run scored. Mason Rinehart was 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored with an RBI.

On Monday at the Orange Beach Sportsplex, Bob Jones pushed across 3 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past University School of Jackson, Miss., for a 7-6 win.

Bob Jones’ Hermesch singled to open the pivotal inning, but he was erased when Vincent Howald grounded into a fielder’s choice. Chatmon was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second before a strikeout for the second out.

Hammonds doubled on a hard grounder between third and short to score pinch-runner Segraves and move Chatmon to third. Johnson singled up the middle to drive in Chatmon and Hammonds to give the Patriots their first lead of the day.

Adkins had a solo home run for Bob Jones and Martin went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Leadoff hitter Hammonds was 2-for-4 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Chatmon also had an RBI.

Nicholas Koukos earned the win in relief of starter Brazeal, working a hitless 1.1 innings with a walk. Brazeal allowed 6 runs – 3 earned – on 8 hits with 4 strikeouts and 3 walks. Martin worked the final inning with 2 strikeouts and a walk.

The Patriots gave up 9 hits and committed an error, while the visitors had 2 errors.

Athens Bible 8, Cornersville (Tenn.) 0

Luke Murrell struck out 8 and helped his cause with a triple, double and single with 3 RBIs as the Trojans picked up the win at Cornersville, Tenn., on Monday. The sophomore gave up a hit and walked 3 in 4 innings pitched.

Ryan Faust drove in 2 runs with 3 singles for Athens Bible. Ethan Barnes had 2 singles with an RBI, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. Chandler James singled and drove in a run and stole 2 bases. Gavin Butler had a pair of base hits. Sam Hall had a pair of hits and scored 2 runs with 2 stolen bases.

Jake Banta drove in a run and struck out 5 hitters in relief of Murrell. He walked 3 in 2.2 innings.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Mary Montgomery 12, Theodore 1

DJ Broughton drove in 3 runs and the Vikings scored a season-high 12 runs in the 5-inning win over Theodore at home on Thursday.

Broughton opened the scoring for MGM with a 1-out triple to deep center field driving in Fuller Musgrove and Brady Stewart. The Vikings’ final run came off the bat of Broughton with an RBI to end the game in the fifth. Broughton reached base a fourth time with a walk in the third inning coming around to score on error to put MGM up 6-1.

MGM scored in every inning, pounding out 10 hits. Lane Patterson matched Broughton with 3 hits, driving in 3 runs.

The Bobcats lone run came on 2-out single in the second inning with Cohen Irby driving in Kyler Kemmeter. Theodore only managed one hit against MGM pitching.

Cooper Turner picked up the win, pitching 4 innings allowing just a single in the second inning. The Vikings (6-6), on a season-high 3-game win streak, will host McGill-Toolen on Monday and play at Saraland on Tuesday.

Theodore (6-9) will meet St. Michael on March 21.

On Monday, University of South Alabama commitment Musgrove slapped a 2-run homer to help the Vikings blank Cottage Hill 5-0 on the road on Monday. Musgrove’s first-inning blast scored Carlos Smith and gave Mary G. Montgomery all the runs it would need.

Anderson Murray brought in a run and Keelan Moye drove in 2 more for the Vikings in the fourth.

Murray also earned the win for MGM (5-6) – its first shutout of the season – by striking out 6 and allowing 4 hits in 5 innings.

Trevor Smith reached base twice for the 6-4 Warriors in the loss, Cottage Hill’s first shutout loss of the year.

Braedan Ryan took the loss for Cottage Hill, allowing all 5 runs, on 5 hits with 5 walks through 4 innings.

Davidson 10, Satsuma 9

Hudson Spivey knocked in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh to lead the Warriors over Satsuma Wednesday night at Jacobs field at the University of Mobile.

The Warriors scored 7 runs in the final 2 innings. Spivey, the Warriors’ senior pitcher, singled sharply to center field scoring Trent Hughes and Seth Hollins to give the Warriors a 9-8 lead. Spivey finished with 4 RBIs and picked up the victory on the mound, striking out 5 in 7 innings.

The Gators had led 5-1 after 4 innings.

The Warriors top three hitters in the lineup – Adyn Scott, Spivey and Brian Davis – had 3 hits apiece. Davis added a pair of RBIs, including a first inning single to drive in Scott to give the Warriors the early 1-0 lead.

Micah Sullivan doubled to drive in KJ Austin and Jake May the following inning to put the Gators back on top 3-1. Sullivan finished with 2 doubles and drove in 3 runs. Braxton Byrd and Brady Coleman added a pair of hits each for Satsuma. Byrd had 2 RBIs and 2 stolen bases.

Satsuma (9-4) plays Thomasville on Friday and takes on the Warriors again Monday at 6:30 p.m.

BIRMINGHAM

Hueytown 9, Mortimer Jordan 3

The Golden Gophers out-hit Mortimer Jordan 9-1 and overcame 6 errors to win on the road on Tuesday. Hueytown scored single runs in the top of the second and third innings, added 4 in the fourth and 3 in the fifth to carry a 9-0 lead into the seventh.

William Vaughan earned the win, allowing 2 unearned runs on no hits with 8 strikeouts and 3 walks through 6.1 innings. Slade Wilson pitched the final 2 outs, allowing a run and Mortimer Jordan’s lone hit.

Vaughan also went 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. Bronson Moore went 2-for-5 with an RBI, Hunter Syx was 1-for-2 with an RBI and 2 runs. Jose Irreaza was 1-for-3 with 3 RBIs and Noah Syx was 2-for-4 with a run.

Starter Jackson Woodruff took the loss for the Blue Devils, allowing 6 runs – 2 earned – on 5 hits with 2 strikeouts and 4 walks over 3.2 innings. He was the first of six Mortimer Jordan pitchers on the day.

Mortimer Jordan had 4 errors in the loss. Catcher Kye West had the Devils’ hit with an RBI. Braylon Disko also had an RBI on a sacrifice.

Homewood 6, Fairview 1

The Patriots improved to 13-3 on the year with the home win over Fairview on Thursday with Jack Bland running his record to 2-2 on the mound. The junior right-hander threw 3 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Ben Roberts gave up an earned run on 4 hits with 2 strikeouts and a walk over 4 innings in relief for Homewood.

Junior Cooper Mullins had a pair of doubles and an RBI and junior Auburn University commitment Levi Nickoli had a 2-run home run in the win. Senior Jack Ross, a Southern Union Community College signee, had a double, was hit by a pitch, walked and stole 2 bases.

Junior Cooper Sain had a double with 2 RBIs and Will Siegel singled and had an RBI.

On Tuesday, Homewood topped Thompson 7-2 on the road as senior Justin Gamble earned the win in his first varsity start. Gamble allowed an earned run on 3 hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks over 5 innings. Reliever Randal Gartman went 1.1 innings, allowing a hit with a walk and another gunner reached on an error. Nickoli came in and walked the first hitter he faced, but he struck out the No. 2 and No. 3 hitters to slam the door.

Thomas Davis had a pair of hits, including a double, with a run scored. Ross singled and had an RBI. Sain had a double, an RBI and 3 stolen bases. Mullins had a single and an RBI.

Helena 14, Hueytown 1

The Huskies got home runs from Nick Peters and Brett Cannon in the runaway win at Hueytown on Thursday. Peters finished with 3 hits and Cannon had 2.

Braydon Kendrick and Jack Holderfield had 2 hits each for Helena.

Trey Lampman struck out 6 in 5 innings to earn the win.

STATEWIDE

Montgomery Academy 12, Reeltown 11 (11)

Reid McBride delivered a walk-off bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 11th inning, the last of 16 hits Montgomery Academy collected in the home win over Reeltown on Wednesday. The Eagles improved to 9-1 on the season.

Paxton Haigler had 3 hits in the win and McBride had a pair of hits and 2 RBIs. William Marks had 2 hits with 2 RBIs. John Allen Jones, Vincent Desautels, Andrew Hosein and Oscar Fiore all had 2 hits and an RBI for the Eagles.

Desautels – MA’s fourth pitcher on the day – earned the win, throwing the final 5 innings. He gave up 2 hits and no earned runs with 4 strikeouts. McBride was the starter, allowing 2 hits and 2 earned runs with 2 strikeouts in 2.1 innings. Marks pitched 2.1 innings, allowing 6 hits and an earned run. Hosein went 1.1 innings, allowing 3 hits and 4 earned runs.

Tuscaloosa County 3, Bob Jones 2 (8)

The Wildcats pushed across a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge Bob Jones on Thursday. The Patriots out-hit the winners 7-5, but Bob Jones committed 4 errors in the loss to 1 for Tuscaloosa County.

The ’Cats got a pair of doubles in the win, one from Drew Keller and another from Kole Nicholson. Leadoff hitter Dillon Dubose and No. 2 hitter Nicholson and Brooks Mellown were all 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Ford Traweek earned the win in relief of Tate Pettus. Traweek struck out 2 in the scoreless eighth inning for Tuscaloosa County. Pettus went 7 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 7 hits with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Bob Jones’ third pitcher on the day, Dill Adkins, took the loss. He worked the final inning, allowing an unearned run with 1 strikeout and a walk. Starter Jackson Shaw allowed 2 unearned runs on 2 hits with 4 strikeouts over 5.2 innings. Mick Tyrrell walked a batter and allowed a hit in one-third of an inning.

Adkins went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and 2 RBIs. Cole Spanier was 1-for-3 with a double. Myles Hammonds went 2-for-4 and Zack Johnson was 2-for-4 with a run scored.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Baker 5, Mary G. Montgomery 0

The Hornets picked up their seventh win in eight games with the home victory over Mary G. Montgomery on Thursday, scoring 4 goals in the second half.

Japhet Girukwishaka and Grantham Morgan scored a pair of goals apiece for Baker (9-3-1). Girukwishaka got the lone goal of the first half. Daniel Hernandez also got a goal in the win.

Naith Allen had the clean sheet for Hornets in goal.

MGM dropped to 6-7-1 on the season and will play at McGill-Toolen on Tuesday. Baker will play at Alma Bryant on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Baker topped seventh-ranked Class 7A Daphne 3-2 on the road at Jubilee Stadium. Jerson Rubi Gonzales scored the go-ahead goal with 3:25 remaining in the game.

Morgan was credited with the assist after the corner kick by Morgan sailed past Daphne defenders and Gonzales headed it in to put the Hornets up.

Morgan also picked up an assist on the Hornets’ opening goal by Kayson Lawrence in the first half and scored a goal with 14:25 remaining in the first half to put Baker up 2-1. Allen assisted on the goal.

Kipper Miller scored both goals for the Trojans.

Daphne (6-3-2) will host Fairhope on Friday.

BIRMINGHAM

Gardendale 5, Altamont 0

Gardendale (9-2) snapped a two-game losing skid with the road win over Altamont on Thursday at Lily Field in Birmingham.

Gardendale’s Wyatt Chandler scored 3 goals, while Chris Bean and Logan Stewart scored a goal apiece. Goalkeeper Connor Thomas earned the shutout for the Rockets.

The victory put the Rockets back in the win column after falling 4-0 at Hewitt-Trussville last week and a 4-2 loss at Chelsea earlier this week. Mikey Pribyl and Jon Price scored against Chelsea.

The Rockets return to action on Monday at Clay-Chalkville in the Class 6A, Area 12 opener set for 7 p.m.

Prattville Christian 5, Autauga Academy 0

Prattville Christian picked up the Class 1A/3A, Area 3 win at home on Monday with Cody Chapman scored a pair of goals.

Ethan Green had a goal and an assist for the Panthers. Lannom Bowman, Cooper Dunn and Cody Chapman also scored in the win. Micah Newsom and Lian Van Heerden had an assist each.

Landy Guidry recorded the shutout in goal.

Montgomery Academy 7, Hoover 2

The Eagles knocked off Hoover on the road on Wednesday, winning five of six singles matches.

John Alford won at No. 1 singles, Jackson Brown took the No. 2 win, Ford Morano took No. 3, Edwin Wu won No. 4 and Anton Yang took No. 6.

Alford and Brown teamed to win the No. 1 doubles match and Yang and Bo Johnston won at No. 3.

Montgomery Academy goes into spring break with a 16-1 overall record, 9-1 in dual matches.

BIRMINGHAM

Thompson 7, Helena 1

The Warriors scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth and pushed across 5 in the sixth to earn the win over visiting Helena on Tuesday. Thompson pounded out 11 hits to 3 for the visitors.

Senior Olivia Tindell went 3-for-3 for Thompson and catcher Aubrey Bauer was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs. Winning pitcher Kadyn Bush helped her cause at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Aubree Hooks doubled in a run, Blakely Davis had an RBI single, Mallory Flournoy had a sacrifice fly RBI and Hannah Hobbs drove in a run.

Bush gave up a run – on a solo home run by Hayden Traywick – on 3 hits with 6 strikeouts and a walk in 7 innings. Starter Marlee Parson took the loss for Helena, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits with 2 strikeouts in 4 innings.

Traywick was 2-for-2 at the plate in the loss.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Saraland 16, Mary Montgomery 2

The Spartans blasted Mary G. Montgomery on the road on Tuesday as Gracie Dee drove in 3 runs with a pair of doubles. Saraland scored 5 runs in the fifth and 5 more in the sixth to break open the game.

Jaydn Byrd, one of six Spartans with multiple hits, doubled in the sixth and finished with 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Dee, Kyla Reed, Olivia Ray, Mallory Brown and Kori Simmons each contributed at the plate for Saraland with multiple hits. Simmons also had 3 RBIs for Saraland.

Myleigh Dobbins went the distance in the circle for the Spartans to get the win. She struck out 5, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits.

MGM’s Hannah Fenner had a pair of hits, including a triple, and scored a run when she stole home – one of her 2 stolen bases on the night.

Orange Beach 16, Satsuma 0

Orange Beach used an 11-run first inning to roll past Satsuma on the road Tuesday night.

The Makos totaled 15 hits with Daigle Wilson and LC Robbins getting 3 apiece. Robbins ripped a grand slam in the first inning and Wilson had 2 stolen bases on the night for the defending state champs.

Katie King had a 2-run home run in the first inning and Ava Hodo and Teagan Revette had a pair of hits for Orange Beach. Revette had a pair of doubles and drove in 3 runs.

KG Favors picked up the win for Orange Beach, tossing 3 hitless innings with 3 strikeouts. The Gators got 2 hits in the loss.

Satsuma (9-7-1) will play at Mobile Christian on Monday at 7 p.m. Orange Beach (2-1) will host American Christian in the Orange Beach Classic on Friday at 3 p.m.

Foley 6-3, Cottage Hill 2-16

Foley split a pair of games at home with Cottage Hill on Monday with Bailee Egbert tossing a 7-inning no-hitter in Game 1. Egbert struck out 8, but Cottage Hill capitalized on 5 walks to get its runs.

Foley’s Machaela Newell drove in a pair runs with a double in the bottom of the third inning and Nyla Harrison, who had 3 hits, had an RBI in the fourth.

Madison Brown took the loss for the Warriors, allowing 1 earned runs in 7 innings. She struck out 5 Foley hitters.

In Game 2, the Warriors exploded for 16 runs on 16 hits, including 3 by Makenzie Gartman, who was 3-for-3 with an RBI, 2 sacrifice bunts and a stolen base. Jaylyn Mosley, Paislei Daughtery, Madison Brown and Jaycee Mosley had 2 hits apiece with Mosley scoring 4 runs.

Daughtery collected the win, holding Foley scoreless in 3 innings with 2 strikeouts.

Nyla Harrison had an RBI double for the Lions.

Baldwin County 2, Saraland 0

Madilyn Byrd recorded the shutout for Baldwin County, allowing 2 hits over 7 innings with 5 strikeouts and no walks.

Madisyn Williams went 2-for-3 for the Tigers and Rylie Echele drove in a run when she was hit by a pitch.

Laken Bryan took the loss for Saraland, allowing 5 hits and a earned run over 6 innings. She struck out a batter and walked two.

Kyla Reed and Gracie Dees had hits for the Spartans.

Brantley 7, Elba 3

Alex Grimes struck out 14 as the Bulldogs topped Elba at home on Tuesday.

Marley Kilcrease and Savannah Nichols both had doubles for Brantley. Nichols drove in a pair of runs and Kilcrease scored a run.

Shades Valley 10, Clay-Chalkville 0

The Mounties blanked Clay-Chalkville on the road on Monday.

Aaliyah Carter scored a hat trick-plus with 5 goals for Shades Valley. Venus Reyes scored 2 goals with Yasaira Mancilla, Ainsley Roberts and Karma Fitzpatrick adding 1 apiece.

STATEWIDE

Saint James 2, Trinity 1

The Trojans ran their record to 5-0, but Trinity did manage to break Saint James’ streak of scoreless wins on Thursday in a Class 4A, Area 3 game.

Forward KK Corley scored both goals for Saint James in the home win, with assists from Molly Phillips and Natalie Barton. The Trojans led 1-0 at the half and 2-0 until a late free kick by Trinity.

On Monday, the Trojans’ defense ran their scoreless streak to four games with a 3-0 win over Northside Methodist in Saint James’ home opener.

Stella Williams picked up the shutout and Sana Shuford led the Saint James defense.

Ragan King scored the opening goal and had an assist on the final goal for the Trojans. Barton and Gracie Russell also scored, with Hedda Stoerdal and Shuford getting assists.

Prattville Christian 10, Autauga Academy 0

Aiden Williams and Scarlett Mahlke scored 4 goals apiece as the Panthers blanked Autauga Academy at home on Monday in a Class 1A/3A, Area 3 contest.

Addison Sutton had 3 assists in Prattville Christian’s runaway win. Elizabeth Rossi and Mimi Szeker also scored goals for PCA.

Mahlke and Eden Alexander combined in goal to complete the shutout win.

On Thursday, PCA traveled to Chilton County and battled to a 1-1 stalemate. Addison Sutton scored for the Panthers (4-3-1).

Montgomery Academy 9, Central-Phenix City 0

The Eagles picked up another Class 7A, Section 2 win at home on Monday.

Montgomery Academy’s Gabby Barrera beat Hadlee Pittman 6-0, 6-0 in No. 1 singles. Lola Campbell topped Keydan Keels 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, Mary Surhea White beat Allie Kyser 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3, Sailor Vance beat Kisten McRoy 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4, Alyssa Kaplan beat Rebecca Bonner 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and Lillian Cameron beat Madison Reynolds 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6.
