Rivian adds EV delivery van customers

play

Get ready to see more electric delivery vans in your neighborhood and on the road. EV Raven will begin selling its big-box commercial van to customers other than Amazon in February.

Customers can expect lower costs and greater safety thanks to the van’s drivetrain and other features, Erica Saipan, director of fleet solutions, told me as we stood in one of the vans on the Detroit Auto Show’s indoor EV test track.

The van is on display and Rivian’s luxury electric R1T midsize pickup and R1S SUV are available for demo rides until the show closes on January 20.

Prices start at $83,000. Raven promises significant operating and energy savings in addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The RCV, or Raven Commercial Van, is similar in appearance and features to Amazon’s pre-owned vans. The retailer is a major Raven investor. It has ordered 100,000 Raven vans, and the first vehicles rolled off the assembly line in Normal, Illinois.

Modern look, unique features

As for appearance, RCVs are long, sleek delivery vans with ultra-modern visible exterior lights.

Rivian is focusing on large fleet operators as it ramps up sales, Tsypin said. Customers will begin receiving the Delivery 500 and Long Delivery 700 vans this spring.

Top features include:

  • 15.6-inch center touchscreen
  • Low step height for easy entry and exit
  • Easy handhold for entry
  • Bright and recognizable LED headlights
  • Rear halo safety lighting and tail lights
  • 360 degree cameras for parking and driver safety
  • Automatic bulkhead door for cargo security and ergonomics
  • Bright cargo space with 6 feet, 10 inches of headroom
  • Energy-saving “microclimate seats” for all-weather comfort

The automatic bulkhead door opens when the driver puts the vehicle in park to deliver packages and locks into drive. A proximity sensor turns it off if the driver moves far enough to endanger the cargo.

Charging time and limit

The van has a 100 kWh battery. 500 can go 161 miles on a single charge, 700, 153. The 500 is 248.5 inches long and has a wheelbase of 157.5 inches. The 700 is 278 inches long on a 187-inch wheelbase.

As they are used in shifts, most charging will be done overnight at the depot with 240 volt current. The batteries add 17 mph at this rate and 86 mph on the 50kW DC fast charger. Vans currently come with a CCS DC charging port and an adapter for Tesla style, or NACS, chargers. While the R1T and R1S are adopting built-in NACS ports, the vans will continue to come with CCS ports.

Amazon, which has made it a priority to reduce its carbon footprint, acquired the Vans first because it is a major Raven investor and has committed to buying 100,000 Vans by 2030. Amazon also buys electric vans from other automakers.

Ford to sell 12,160 electric e-Transit commercial vans in 2024 Stellantis’ Ram Truck brand sells ProMaster EV vans, but doesn’t break down sales numbers into electric versus internal combustion.
