Rice farming science in race to reduce grain’s climate change impacts

The livelihood of 150 million rice farmers in the world comes with a cruel contradiction.

Many people are among the poorest people in the world, who live in the most affected regions due to climate change, yet they rely on the crop that is destroying its effects.

Rice, which is a basic crop to feed 4 billion people daily, contributes to 10 % of global human -made methane emissions.

At the world’s largest rice research center in the Philippines, an elite team of rice scientists is on the mission of reducing Rice’s carbon impressions and developing a flexible new type of climate change.

Cutting carbon footprint of rice

The International Rice Research Institute (IRI) is the home of Scientist Ando Radenilson for climate change since 2011. He believes that by 2030 the target is to reduce the emission of the industry by 30 % if the farmers adopt smart farming methods.

“It is very difficult for farmers to engage in sensitivity to climate change, but they will be very sensitive to a reduction in the inputs, reduction of production costs,” said Dr. Radenilson.

She is targeting the three most powerful gases in the greenhouse: carbon dioxide, nitroside oxide and methane.

Its team has found that a side product of methane emissions, traditional flooding paddy systems can be cut by 70 % by wetting and drying paddy soil.

She is examining that if the charcoal can occupy the methane known as Bauchar in the soil before the climate is released, then the answers are expected in a few years.

Australia has funded several IRRI projects, including a $ 1 million greenhouse used for drought cases.

Jean Bank Gold Mine

Born in Queensland, Damien Platon, a scientist, joined the IRRI in 2009.

He connects researchers with the contents of Erie’s Jean Bank, with 132,000 out of the world’s estimated 400,000 rice varieties.

Australia has donated more than 200 wild and cultivated varieties.

Dr. Platin described the bank as a genetic gold mine.

“We have probably used 1 percent of it effectively, so there is still great potential,” he said.

Jane Bank manager Vaniprasad Ramiah says artificial intelligence is accelerating the identity of genes needed by researchers.

Agricultural expert Vender Kumar says the genes obtained from the bank have helped to develop a variety of varieties that flourish when sowing on dry pads, a way that is called dry seeds.

“It eliminated the production of methane by 90 percent, so it has a serious impact on the emissions of greenhouse gases,” said Dr. Kumar.

“If there is no flood, methane does not produce, if we can reduce methane, we can begin to see the opposite effect of climate change within a decade.”

Significantly, this climate win does not come at the expense of farming families.

Australian scientist Demian Platon says Erie has a sense of urgency, which is driven by a desire to work as much as possible for farmers rather than maintaining climate change.
