On Friday morning, when two people with federal badges at the entrance to the Chicago Public School showed, the school employees did what they were trained to do.
Believing that these men were US immigration and customs enforcement agent, employees refused to allow them to go to school, John H. Hameline Elementary, who enters children in kindergarten to an eighth grade, southwest of the city I mostly enter the Latino neighborhood.
The school immediately notified the Chicago Public School officials, who quickly issued a statement.
“Ice agents were not allowed to go to school and were not allowed to talk to any students or staff,” the statement said.
But there was a mistake in the school: the agents were actually from secret service, not snow. A spokesman for a secret service said several hours later that he was investigating a threat against anyone against the trickwin ban.
Spokeswoman, Anthony Goglemi, denied the name of the man who was threatened. The agent went to a nearby home to try to talk to a minor, and then he failed to try school.
But this reform was too late to stop panic and fear, which has already been settled around Chicago after raiding immigration rumors. All the week, many residents were on transfer of the Trump administration to deport unauthorized immigrants, fearing that ice agents could reach workplaces, churches, even schools at any time.
“It looks like it was a huge misunderstanding,” said Mr Gigalimi in an interview.
Mr Giglilmi said the agents had identified themselves with secret service, and their seeds had sealed the words “Homeland Security Department”.
“I just want to clarify it – secret service will never investigate immigration issues,” he said. He said the agency has a permanent presence in Chicago, where former President Barack Obama still owns a house.
An ICE spokesperson said that immigration implementation has not been taken in or around the school.
On Friday, some school systems came to parents in states like New York, California, New Jersey and Illinois to try to convince them that federal agents would not be allowed to go on school without a judicial warrant.
In Chicago, like other circle powers that restrict how much local officials can cooperate in federal efforts to deport non -documentary immigrants, school parents do not ask about their children’s immigration status –
In the back of the Yards neighborhood, outside John H. Hameline Elementary, many parents soon came out of the class, as false reports spread on the texts and Facebook that the immigration agents were in school. Even Government JB Pratzkar worked on social media, citing “raids” reports at an elementary school.
“Within an hour of what was happening, the community came together,” said Burto Agive, a community organizer, who arrived at the school after hearing that the ICE agents were there.
Mr Aguyo advised his rights in English and Spanish, advising his rights, which supporters of immigration are doing the whole week.
“We want to make sure that parents feel safe to send their children to school,” he said.
