Record number of people died on migration routes in 2024: UN – World

Last year was the deadliest year for immigrants, about 9,000 people were dying around the world, the United Nations said on Friday, “The tragedy … unacceptable and prevention”.

“At least 8,938 people were killed on migration routes worldwide in 2024,” the UN migration agency said, adding that the number has reached a record high for the fifth year.

“The tragedy of the increasing number of refugee deaths worldwide is unacceptable and prevented,” said Yuguchi Daniels, deputy director of the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

“There is a human being behind each number, for which the loss is destructive,” said Daniels.

The IOM said, “The actual number of immigrants and disappearances is very high, as many people have become non -documented due to lack of government sources.” It added that the majority of the victims were identified and other details were not known.

In Asia, Africa and Europe, the number of people killed in 2024 with 2,778, 2,242 and 233 respectively.

It states that a total of 2,452 people were recorded in the Mediterranean, which is the central gateway for those trying to reach Europe.

Final data were not yet available to the United States, but the data has so far killed at least 1,233 people.

These include “an extraordinary 341 lost in the Caribbean in 2024 and a record 174 deaths in the forest of the forest between Colombia and Panama.”
