Firefighters who battled overnight to contain a new blaze near Los Angeles appeared to be making progress, even as Southern California’s dangerous fire season continues.
A massive response involving planes, bulldozers and 4,000 personnel was launched as flames raced across the hills in Castaic, 56 kilometers (35 miles) north of Los Angeles.
About 31,000 people were ordered to flee their homes after two deadly fires swept through America’s second-largest city this month, already wreaking havoc in a region.
The newly ignited Hughes fire continued to grow overnight, and by Thursday had consumed 10,000 acres (4,050 hectares), but its growth had slowed considerably after an explosive few hours.
Firefighters said the blaze is 14 percent contained — an indication of how much of the perimeter they believe is stable.
