“While I await their official communication, I am considering my next steps,” Arya said in the post. “This decision raises important questions about the legitimacy of the leadership race and, by extension, the legitimacy of Canada’s next prime minister.”

Liberal Party spokesman Parker Lund confirmed in an email that Arya “will not be running for leader of the Liberal Party.”

Arya’s exit leaves six candidates in the running: former Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, former banker Mark Carney, House Leader Karina Gould, Nova Scotia MP Jaime Batiste and former MPs Frank Bayless and Ruby Dhalla.

The party will announce the winner of the race on March 9.
