A parliamentary intelligence committee said in a June report that some members of the parliament were “waiting or semi -batting” in foreign intervention.
But the inquiry commissioner, Mary Jose Hugo, said in Tuesday’s results that he had noticed any evidence of parliamentarians’ conspiracy and “sometimes mistakes” in the June report.
He also wrote, “There are legitimate concerns about parliamentarians who potentially have trouble with foreign officials, use poor decisions, treat mutual behavior, and probably show objectionable ethics. “
On unknown information, Ms Hugo said: “I think it is not exaggerated to say that on this occasion, the information manipulation (whether foreign or not) is the biggest threat to our democracy.”
An inquiry was sought in September 2023 to investigate the allegations of intervention by China, Russia, India and other foreign actors.
It was in response to the detailed press reports of Chinese interference in the federal elections of 2019 and 2021, many of which are based on leaked intelligence.
There is no evidence that efforts changed the results of both elections.
In several months, the inquiry heard public testimony of witnesses, including members of parliament, national security officials, senior government assistants and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Tuesday’s report, which included 51 recommendations, criticized the government’s response to the intervention, which it has called it slow ..
It also states that “different players involved in different players have not always been better and more,” while efforts to inform the public about interference were “pieces and influence”.
