New Zealand captain Mitchell Sentner won the toss and selected batting against Pakistan in the opening match of the Tree Nation series in Lahore on Saturday.
The match is taking place at the newly renewed Gaddafi Stadium, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif at a spectacular event with music performances.
Veteran New Zealand fast bowler Locky Ferguson was dropped out of the match with a hamstring injury.
South Africa is the third team in the event, which is seen as a warm -up for the Champions Trophy of eight countries in Pakistan from February 19 and the United Arab Emirates.
Each team plays two matches before competing in the final in Karachi on February 14.
