National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq on Monday demanded a “full and immediate” probe into the attack on the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) convoy.
When the firing took place, Akbar was visiting his constituency Kakliot village. The attack took place at 12:45 pm when the speaker’s convoy, which consisted of 20 to 25 vehicles and motorcycles, reached Kakkaleot. Three PPP workers traveling in the convoy were injured when the attackers opened fire indiscriminately.
Sadiq sent the letters today through National Assembly Secretary General Tahir Hussain.
He also requested the Chief Secretary and IGP to submit a comprehensive report to his office within three days.
The letters strongly condemned the incident, calling it “a challenge to the dignity and security of democratic institutions”. He also noted the lack of preventive measures despite previous risk reports, saying the surveillance warranted “careful review and appropriate action.”
“This matter is of the utmost importance, and any delay in resolving it could undermine public confidence in the ability of local authorities to protect and safeguard both the public and its representatives. Safety of Parliamentarians And ensuring safety is important, and immediate steps should be taken to prevent such incidents in the future.
The letters were issued by Speakers’ Forum, which included Sadiq, Senate Chairman Yousuf Raza Gilani, Speakers of four Provincial Assemblies and Speakers of AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan.
