Mikaela Shiffrin is fully recovered and ready to go.
Shiffrin will return to the World Cup circuit next Thursday in Courchevel, France.Nine weeks after suffering a puncture wound and a ruptured abdominal muscle in a crash during a giant slalom race in Killington, Vermont. His next victory would be his 100th career victory, and he has won seven times at Corseville.
Shiffrin posted a video of himself in the gym and back on the ice on his social media accounts Thursday morning. The last frame reads “Courchevel 1/30 … see you soon.”
After winning twice in his first three races this year, Shiffrin was expected to score his 100th victory at Killington, one of his favorite spots and a two-hour drive from Brick Mountain Academy, where he attended as a teenager. Everything was going according to plan after the first run in the giant slalom, where she took a comfortable lead over Sweden’s Sarah Hector.
But less than 15 seconds from the finish line of the second run, Shiffrin lost a lead. She crashed through a gate and attacked another gate before stopping in a safety net. He spent about 20 minutes on the hill before being lowered onto the sled.
“As far as the muscle trauma, there’s a puncture and then basically whatever the stab wound was it did a little dance inside my oblique and basically tore a cave in my oblique muscle. That’s it. Cause there’s bleeding and inflammation and usually pain.” Shiffrin said in a Dec. 4 update.
Shiffrin also said there was some concern that he had damaged his colon because the puncture was close to it and there were some air bubbles. But a test after returning home to Colorado showed it was fine.
“We may have seen symptoms early but it’s good to have confirmation,” he said.
Shiffrin said at the time of the crash that it would be “several weeks” before he could return to racing. She missed the slalom at Killington the day after the crash, as well as the Dec. 14-15 World Cup stop at Beaver Creek, the first time women raced the famous Birds of Prey course.
She has missed six slalom and giant slalom World Cup races since the start of the year. Shiffrin is currently 16th in the overall standings, making it unlikely that he will win the title again this season. He is ninth in the slalom standings.
“It’s another pretty vague injury and it’s really hard to put a timeline on when I’ll be back on the ice or back racing,” Shiffrin said Dec. 4.
