The US Department of State has upgraded its travel alert regarding a famous Caribbean tourist destination.
The British territory of Turkish and Kekos is caused by the crime of “increasing exercise” under a level 2, as well as passengers in the possession of firearms and ammunition.
US officials said most of the crime in the country is in the Turkish and Kekos Archiplago’s main island of Providancels. In the island nation, the police may have investigative resources, and the US embassy, which is the victim of US crime, is located in NASA, Bahamas, not on Turkish and Kekos.
The update also includes a warning that firearms and ammunition, “including the same bullets, which are mistakenly brought to Carry On Bags or Luggage,” are illegal.
“Police strictly enforce these rules, even when passengers depart at the airport. Passengers face arrest, jail time and heavy fines. Some US citizens have been detained for several weeks or more than 12 years after being found with bullets in their luggage.
The warning noted, “Although the law allows some exceptions and discretion, the State Department cannot guarantee your release.”
If you are traveling to Turkish and Kekos, the Department recommends you:
- Before leaving the United States, carefully check your luggage and hand equipment for bullets or firearms. Do not bring these items to the Turks and the Kekos Islands.
- Avoid walking alone and at night.
- Don’t respond to your door at your hotel/residence unless you know who it is.
- Do not physically fight any robbery attempt.
