Kuwait has released a group of US prisoners, who have been jailed for many years, including veterans and military contractors, for many years on drug charges, viewed as a signal of goodwill between the two allies, a representative of detainees on Wednesday.
Following the release of the Trump administration’s top hostage environment, Adam Bohler’s recent visit to the region, and the US government’s constant pressure to bring US citizens to prison in foreign countries.
On a flight from Kuwait to New York with new independent prisoners, Jonathan Franks, a private adviser, who works on cases related to US hostages and detainees, who lived in the country to help secure their release.
“My client and his family are grateful to the Kuwait government for such a humanitarian signal,” Frankx said in a statement.
He said that his clients maintain their innocence and that the additional Americans they represent are also expected to continue through Kuwait.
The State Department did not immediately respond to the request for comment. The names of the released prisoners were not immediately made public.
Kuwait, a small, oil -rich nation, which is connected to Iraq and Saudi Arabia and is close to Iran, is considered an important non -NATO Eli in the United States. Foreign Secretary Marco Rubio paid tribute to the relationship like last month, when he said that the United States “is steadfast in supporting Kuwait’s sovereignty and the welfare of its people.”
Since Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein invaded the country, these countries have received close military partnerships since the 1991 Gulf War to deport Iraqi troops, in which about 13,500 US troops were attacked by Kuwait at Camp alias and Ali al -Salim Airbus.
But Kuwait has also detained several US military contractors in some cases, for many years, on drug charges. His family has alleged that his fans face abuse in a country that bans alcohol and has strict drug laws.
Others have criticized the Kuwait police for bringing Trump -up allegations and manufacturing evidence against him.
The State Department has warned passengers that drug charges in Kuwait may be sentenced to prolonged imprisonment and death sentence. Defense cooperation agreements between the United States and Kuwait possibly include provisions that ensure that US forces are subject to US laws only, though it does not include contractors.
Since President Donald Trump has returned to the White House, his Republican administration has released the release of US school teacher Mark Fogle in a prisoner exchange with Russia and announced the release of a US citizen by Belarus.
The US government, which was released on Wednesday, was not misrepresented by the US government. This status applies to the sub -parts of Americans locked abroad, and historically ensures that the administration’s special presidential envoy has handled the issue for hostage affairs – the office that handles negotiations for release.
But supporters of these people in foreign countries hope that the Trump administration takes a more flexible approach and secures the release of those who are not considered to be misconduct.
“The regrettable fact that these Americans were jailed for years because of a misguided policy, before President Trump took office, abroad, abroad, had not been detained,” said Frankx, Frankx said.
“These releases show that what is a achievement when the US government prefers to bring Americans home,” he added.
