The Senate confirmed Christie Nam to lead the Department of Homeland Security on Saturday morning, solidifying a key staff position in President Donald Trump’s cabinet as he plans to crack down on mass deportations.
Seven Democrats — including John Fetterman, Tim Kaine and Andy Kim — joined 52 Republicans to confirm Noem. She will lead the agency that oversees ICE, FEMA, the Border Patrol and other security organizations. He will play a prominent role in leading Trump’s mass deportation efforts along with former South Dakota governor Tom Homan, whom Trump appointed as “border czar.”
Noem, once the favorite to be Trump’s vice presidential nominee after awkwardly admitting to killing his dog in his memoir, told senators during Confirmation hearing that she applied for the DHS job because she “knew it was the president’s top priority.”
Nim told senators during his confirmation hearing that he was eager to follow through on Trump’s mass deportation plans, allaying concerns from Sen. Ruben Gallego, D-Aries, that such schemes would Can send massive shockwaves across the country.
The priority is eliminating “those who have broken our laws and perpetuated violence,” but law-abiding people, Noem said. Did not directly address removal efforts for undocumented Americans.
“Getting criminal aliens off our streets and out of the country will help make American communities safe again,” Noem told senators last week. “The president’s top priority is to secure the border and immediately deport these criminal actors.”
