Jos Leijdekkers: Wanted Dutch drug-smuggler ‘is in Sierra Leone’

A spokesperson for the Dutch Public Prosecution Service (OM) said the Ledgedeckers had been living in Sierra Leone for about six months.

They said he was known by the alias Bole Jose and recently suspected he was living in Turkey.

Sierra Leonean officials have not commented on the claims.

Reuters news agency reported that the Ledekkers were spotted in Sierra Leone in January when the wife of the president of Sierra Leone posted a video on social media of a church service she was attending with her husband.

Ledgedeckers can be seen in the video, according to Reuters. The BBC has not been able to confirm the footage.

Dutch police have described the Ledgedeckers as “one of the main players in international cocaine trafficking”.

A 210,000 (8 168,000) reward is being offered for information leading to his arrest. It is reportedly the highest amount ever offered for a Dutch fugitive.

Ledekkers is listed as a most wanted fugitive by the European Union’s law enforcement agency Europol.

West Africa is an important transit point for cocaine trafficking from Latin America.

On January 17, Sierra Leone recalled its ambassador from neighboring Guinea after seven suitcases containing suspected cocaine were found at an embassy.

Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister Alhaji Musa Timatis Kabbah said Guyanese authorities used a vehicle belonging to the Sierra Leonean embassy and detained its occupants on suspicion of “substance suspected to be cocaine”.

“In light of this serious development, the government has recalled the Ambassador of Sierra Leone to Guinea, Ambassador Mr. Alimami Bangura, to Freetown to provide a full account of the incident as a matter of urgency,” he added.

The minister said that the returning envoy was not in the car and was not in custody.

“It has not been proven that the ambassador is involved in this smuggling,” he added.
