John Cooney: Irish boxer dies after suffering brain injury in Belfast fight

28 -year -old Super Father Weight Boxer John Koni passed away last week after the defeat of Welshman Nathan Hols in Belphast.

The Irish boxer suffered an intracranial hemorrhage and had surgery to overcome the pressure on his brain after bout in the Ulster Hall.

The medical team of Galeman Koni was evaluated before going to the stretcher and shifted to Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.

“It is with complete catastrophe that we have to declare that John Koni has passed away after fighting for John Koni’s life,” said the MHD promotions.

“Mr. and Mrs Koni and his fiancée Emily would like to thank the staff at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, who has worked hard to save lives and sent messages of support and prayer to everyone.

“He was a very dear son, brother and partner, and we would all live in a lifetime to forget how special he was.

The competition was stopped in the ninth round, with the first defense of the Celtic Super feeder weight title.

The Gale Boxer won the Celtic Title with the first round of wins against Chatille Cameron on the undercard of revenge by Katie Taylor in Dublin against Lim Genor in November 2023, in Dublin.

After that, Koni spent a year before defeating Tanzania’s Tampela Maharosi in London in October 2024, recovering from a hand injury.
