JD Vance clashes with CBS anchor over unvetted refugees: ‘I don’t want that person in my country’

During an interview on “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Vice President J.D. Vance sparred with CBS anchor Margaret Brennan on illegal immigrants and refugees.

Brennan asked Vance for her thoughts on President Donald Trump, through an executive order, pausing refugee resettlement actions and calling for better vetting of visa applications.

He specifically asked if he was standing. His past comments that the United States should “not turn away anyone who has been properly vetted.”

“Well, Margaret, I don’t agree that all these immigrants, or all these refugees, have been properly vetted,” Vance said. “In fact, we know there are cases of people who were allegedly properly vetted and then literally planning terrorist attacks in our country. This happened during the campaign. , if you will remember. So, obviously, not all of these foreign nationals have been properly vetted.”

Brennan pressed Vance on whether he stood by his comments while the executive order left tens of thousands of Afghan refugees in limbo in the resettlement process.

Vance responded, “My primary concern as Vice President, Margaret, is to take care of the American people…”

“So, no,” Brennan said.

“… And now that we know that we have problems vetting many of these migrant programs, we can’t land thousands of undecideds in our country at all. That’s not good.”

“These guys check out. These guys check out,” Brennan insisted.

Vance cited the recent example of an Afghan national in Oklahoma charged with planning a terrorist attack in October. He originally came to the country in September 2021 after the United States withdrew from Afghanistan and he went through multiple vetting processes.

“I don’t want my kids to share a neighborhood with people who aren’t vetting properly. And because I don’t want that for my kids, I don’t want any other American citizen’s kids to do the same.” Won’t,” Vance said.

“No. And it was a special case,” Brennan said. “It wasn’t clear if he was radicalized when he got here or while he was living here, but…”

“I don’t really care, Margaret,” Vance replied. “I don’t want that person in my country, and I think most Americans agree with me.”

Vance also defended Trump’s executive order ending birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants because Brennan argued that “this is a country founded by immigrants.”

“It’s a very unique country, and it was founded by some immigrants and some settlers,” Vance said. “But just because we were founded by immigrants doesn’t mean that, 240 years later, we have to have the stupidest immigration policy in the world. No country says that temporary visitors , their children will be given full access to the benefits and blessings of American citizenship.”
