India brings home nearly 300 citizens rescued from Southeast Asian scam centres – World

The government said that India has brought about 300 of its citizens home, who were tempted to offer fake jobs in various Southeast Asian countries, including Myanmar, and have been prepared to engage in cybercrime and other fake activities in scam compounds.

Thousands of people have been released from cyber scam centers this year along the Thailand-Myanmar border as countries work together to eliminate criminal networks.

China and Indonesia sent some of their citizens back home last month.

The Indian Foreign Ministry said late on Monday, “Indian embassies in Myanmar and Thailand have linked to local authorities to seek the return of 283 Indian nationals today by the MASOT in Thailand via IAF (Indian Air Force) aircraft.”

Thailand arrested 100 people last week as part of a crackdown at scam centers.

According to the UN, criminal groups have smuggled millions of people to centers, generating billions of dollars annually from illegal online schemes.

India also warned its citizens against the scams, and advised them to “confirm” foreign employers’ credentials and check the “former” agents and companies recruiting agents and companies before taking a job offer.
