In wake of shooting, Waikiki businesses devise new security plan to offset police shortage

Honololo (Aianosino)-The arrest of a 19-year-old man involved in a shootout between two groups on Kalakawa on Sunday is a welcome news for residents and workers who left their neighborhood in the dark about danger.

The leaders of the community described the incident as “once”, but one who raised serious concerns.

“It was a victim of chaos, it was frightened, the voices of the shots were gone, and some of them are still leaving food shops,” said Trevor Abarzova, president and executive director of the Wiki’s Business Environment District Association. “It is rarely rare in the shaky, but unfortunately he did so.”

Community leaders say the more dangerous thing was that during the chaos there was the silence of the Honolo Police Department.

It is pointing to the business community to be more active and counter the ongoing police shortage.

“It took about 10 minutes to respond to the officers,” said Abarzwa. “After the situation, he did not talk to the retailers who were clean around the surrounding areas, so people were hiding in the back rooms and people were covered and they did not know that the shooting had stopped.”

Passengers did not even know whether the gunmen were still loose.

“It is really worrying that we do not have the good presence of law enforcement agencies,” said Senior Sharon Moriwaki, D. Wakki, Alna, Kakaku, McCullie. “We have a great community policing team, but is like a command? It used to be better, I have to say. We had a commander who was there.”

“The shortage of police in Hanololo is affecting us where we have a shortage of 450 officers, 40 % less,” Abarzova added. “Earlier, we defeated the police down from the bottom.”

The District of Improvement in the Wiki business says the violent crime is dramatically low in the tourism center thanks to the Safe and Sound Partnership, HPD community policing and its ambassadors’ program.

It is now launching a new program in July to meet security and support HPD.

“This special response team is going to become a high security guard in which Aloha Ambassador looks different from a different uniform. He will have a body camera, but he will have such help that the presence of the police will be defeated. They will have bicycles.

There will be numerous guards per shift and 24/7 coverage, and will help handle large crowds during spring breaks, summer and holidays.

They will not carry weapons, but will work as an emergency to prevent criminals and resources.

“For the presence of safety to walk down and walk down to make people feel more safer for retailers and hotels and employees,” said Abarzova.
