ICE arrests 956 migrants as part of Trump’s immigration crackdown

Since taking office, Trump has taken 21 executive actions to overhaul the US immigration system.

Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, was in Chicago to oversee operations there, but his federal crackdown has unsettled Democratic leaders.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson acknowledged the ICE enforcement activity, saying Chicago police were not involved and reminding residents to know their rights.

In Miami on Sunday, federal law enforcement agencies conducted “several immigration enforcement actions,” the city’s Homeland Security Investigations said on social media.

This includes ICE’s local office in Miami detaining undocumented immigrants for various crimes.

An unknown person said CBS News, externalthe BBC’s US news partner, that ICE escorted his wife during raids in Miami this weekend.

“It’s despicable what they’re doing right now,” he told CBS. “It’s so embarrassing.”

He said his wife was in the process of getting citizenship when ICE arrived: “They just came and they took it away.”

Last week, Newark Mayor Ross Barca said undocumented residents and citizens — including a military veteran — were detained without a warrant during an ICE raid on a local business.

“Newark will not stand idly by while people are being illegally terrorized,” Baraka said.

Immigration advocates have warned that others, including citizens, could be caught in the crossfire during ICE raids.

Meanwhile, Homan has repeatedly said that undocumented people caught in raids on undocumented criminals will also be deported.

On Sunday, in an interview with ABC News, Homan said he expected the number of arrests and deportations to “continue to increase” and said the focus right now was “threats to public safety, threats to national security.” is

After 956 arrests on Sunday, there were 286 arrests on Saturday, 593 arrests on Friday and 538 arrests on Thursday.

According to data from the Migration Policy Institute, Joe Biden has deported 1.5 million during his four years in office. These numbers mirror the number of deportations during Trump’s first term.
