‘I miss my school’: BBC launches Arabic programme for children in war zones

Recruitment and Safa are among the 30 million children who are outside the Middle East and North Africa school, according to UNICEF, a UN children’s agency. It is estimated that more than half – 16.5 million – in Sudan only.

In response, the BBC World Service has launched its award -winning educational program Darus – or an Arabic edition of lessons.

UNICEF spokesman Saleem Owais says in Gaza last year, “more than 600,000 children – these are all school children in Gaza – not educated”.

“We are looking into the style that conflicts, insecurity and crises are causing real harm to children’s education and learning,” he added.

In Sudan, almost two years after the civil war between the army and the paramilitary support forces, millions of children are living in refugee camps where education is available only through local measures.

In an interview with the BBC, Sudan’s Minister of Education, Ahmed Khalifa, highlighted the scale of disaster.

“No state was forgiven,” he says. “Sudan has about 15,000 public schools. Of these schools, between 60 % and 70 % of these schools have been completely damaged, which has lost their foundations, infrastructure and books.

“Even in safe states, schools have been harmed by the destruction of militias.”
