In 2024, about 66 66,000 people were deported from the United States to Guatemala. Under Trump, that number is expected to increase.
Central American country Guatemala has agreed to receive the number of exile flights from the United States after a visit to Foreign Secretary Marco Rubio.
At a news conference on Wednesday, Guatemala President Bernardo Irwalo also announced that his country would accept non -citizens sent from the United States.
“We have agreed to increase the number of flights from other nationalities, along with the number of flights from both of our nationalities, to increase the number of flights from other nationalities,” said Eriwalo, which appeared in Rubio.
This is not the first time that Guatemala accepted deportation flights from the United States: he did so under the US President Joe Biden’s former administration.
But the current President Trump has launched a lot of campaigns to seal the irregularities in the United States, and after taking office on January 20, he has pressured countries around the region to join his efforts.
Talking on condition of anonymity, a Guatemala official told Reuters that under Biden, the Central American country receives about 14 exile flights daily.
It is unclear how much it may increase under Trump.
But Reuters noted that nearly 66 66,000 Guatemala, which was deported from the United States in FY 2024, were more than a year during Trump’s first period, from 2017 to 2021.
Rubio visited Guatemala as part of his first journey as a US top diplomat.
They are traveling through Panama, El Salvador and Costa Rica before reaching Guatemala, traveling to the region to support Trump’s anti -immigration Push. He is ready to travel to the next Dominican Republic.
But while living in Guatemala, he praised Erwalo for accepting non -citizens in Guatemala’s borders.
Before taking office, Trump’s transfer team had to keep detained non -citizens as part of immigration raids. Some countries like Venezuela and Cuba have refused to participate in American deportation flights.
For example, in December, it was reported that Trump had planned to approach the Caribbean countries, including the Bahamas, Grenada and Turkish and Kekos, to accept immigrants from other countries.
But the leadership of the nations of the island refused. “Bahamas does not have the resources to adjust such a request,” the Prime Minister of Bahamian Philip Davis said at the time.
On Wednesday, Rubio indicated that the United States would provide financial support to Guatemala so that it could return to non -citizens to their native countries.
He also praised Eriwalo and said that the deportation flight agreement “is very important to us in terms of migration situation”.
“Not only their consent to accept the citizens, but those from other nationalities, want to return to their homeland, and we have promised our efforts to support these efforts,” Rubio said.
President Irwalo, on his own, indicated that the question of accepting immigrants with criminal records was not discussed.
A day ago, El Salvador president, Nayeb Bokli, offered to send any violent criminals to jail, the United States sends its way – whether it be immigrants or American citizens.
However, even the Trump administration officials have expressed doubts about the legal status of the offer.
Rubio thanked Bokel for his offer but acknowledged legal barriers. He said about the United States, “We have a constitution.”
Nevertheless, the United States on Tuesday began sending non -documentary immigrants to their military base in the Cuban city of Guantanamo Bay, a detention center that allegedly criticized human rights abuses.
It is estimated that 11 million non -documents live in the United States until 2022, many people play an important role in their communities.
