All education offices will be closed for “security reasons” on Tuesday evening and Wednesday, according to a memo sent to all employees and received by CNN.
Employees have been instructed to take their laptops with them and vacate the building starting at 6pm. According to a memo sent by James Hairfield by the Department’s Office for Security, Facilities and logistics, the offices are ready to be reopened on Thursday.
Hairfield did not specify safety reasons in the memo, and the Department of Education did not immediately respond to CNN’s comments.
The memo has come to light when the department is weighing large scale deductions along with the federal government agencies, and President Donald Trump has threatened that it will completely shut down the education department.
Several Education Department employees told CNN that the latest news hit them hard, and they were widely relieved and scared of Trump’s executive order.
In the memo, Hairfield said that the closure of offices was applied at the headquarters of the Department of Education at Washington, DC and regional offices. Under the guidance, employees are allowed to work from home on Wednesday and they are instructed to take laptops while quitting on Tuesday.
Long -term department staff told CNN that they could not remember a time when all the offices were closed, even when important VIPs were on the site.
