WASHINGTON – The U.S. military will soon deploy active-duty forces to the nation’s southern border, according to a defense official who was not authorized to speak ahead of the official announcement.
The official announcement of the appointment is expected later today, officials said. The move comes in the wake of several border security executive actions enacted by President Donald Trump since taking office on Monday afternoon.
According to one Associated Press reportsAbout 1,500 active duty troops are expected to be deployed. About 2,500 members of the National Guard and Army Reserve are already assisting U.S. Customs and Border Protection with logistics and other support duties at the border, a Pentagon spokesman told USA Today.
Active-duty troops were last ordered to the border by former President Joe Biden’s administration, and Trump did the same during his first term.
Unless the administration invokes the Mutiny Act, active duty troops cannot assist with concerns and will be limited to supporting roles as in the past.
