At least one person was killed and 11 others injured in a horrific accident on the M-9 Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway near Nooriabad early Wednesday morning, police said.
Fatal road accidents are frequent on highways in Pakistan, mainly due to speeding, dangerous overtaking and disregard for traffic rules.
Nooriabad Police Station House Officer (SHO) Nadeem Solangi said that the Karachi-bound bus collided with a trailer parked near the cement factory.
“The driver of the coach died on the spot,” Solangi said, adding that the injured were shifted to Liaquat University Hospital in Hyderabad.
The information center of Edhi Rescue Service in Karachi said in a statement that the deceased has been identified as 50-year-old Mushtaq Shah and his body has been shifted to Nooriabad police station.
Earlier, four people, including a newlywed and her mother, died as a result of a horrific collision between two cars near Dhabiji on the Karachi Thatta section of the national highway, while 6 others died as a result of the car catching fire after the accident. People were injured.
Eyewitnesses blamed ongoing, poor maintenance work on the highway for the collision. One side of the highway was completely closed and traffic was diverted to the other side where vehicles moved in opposite directions without any barriers to separate vehicles, he said.
In December last year, a speeding dumper hit and killed a college professor and his wife on the M-9 motorway. Police say the accident took place at a U-turn on the highway near Barak petrol pump, killing the couple on the spot.
