A group on The threat of losing federal funding under President Donald Trump said he had lost funding that the Biden administration had originally denied to support a ceasefire in Gaza.
The Biden administration last year suspended federal funding from the Climate Justice Alliance, a nonprofit climate organization, over its support for Palestine, The Intercept previously reported. The group will not receive funding under Trump, who has signaled his plans to launch political attacks on nonprofits and reverse many climate policies on day one.
CJA political director Tommy Chow said that by withholding funding promised to the Climate Justice Alliance, the Biden administration paved the way for Trump to more easily block political enemies, such as indigenous and poor community organizers who advocate for climate change. Working on the issues. which is now known as TR Rose.
“The embattled administration had months to ensure that the money would go directly to the communities most affected by the damage,” Rose said. “And now this administration has paved the way for the removal of critical public infrastructure and funding from the communities most affected.”
Rose said the wildfires that swept through Los Angeles earlier this month show that the effects of climate change are already there.
“Communities, as we can see on the West Coast, have been put directly under the fire of draining protections and resources to defend against the effects of climate change,” he said. “This lack of funding is an example of the ways communities are forced to fight for such limited resources and support to avoid the political, economic and climate catastrophes that affect us all every day.”
Climate activists were already concerned about Trump’s plans to roll back efforts to tackle the climate crisis. Trump signed Executive order Withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Agreement, cuts to the international framework Greenhouse gas emissions.
“The real energy emergency is … the fatal consequences of prioritizing polluters over people.”
Last month, Environmental Protection Agency staff wrote an open letter demanding that the Biden administration defund the CJA and that the agency end its work with Israel.
The group released a statement Condemning Trump’s announcement on Monday of plans to impose a border emergency and roll back environmental protections.
“The real energy emergency is not about mining on public lands for corporate profit — it’s about the deadly consequences of prioritizing polluters over people,” the statement said. “The right’s war against workers and the environment will hurt us all, and now is the time to hold them accountable.”
