The Greenland Center Rights Opposition Party has won a surprising general election by Donald Trump’s semi -autonomous territory.
The Democratic Party, which supports Denmark’s gradual independence, received about 30 % of the vote in the elections four years ago, compared to just nine percent.
The party has withdrawn against Trump’s rhetoric, saying that the future of the area has to be decided for the Green Landers.

Why does it make a difference
Tuesday’s election was an opportunity to respond to Trump for the Green Landers, which is clearly spoken about the desire to overcome the Greenland. Trump told the Congress joint meeting last week that he believed the United States was about to “get one way”.
Democratic leader Jennis-Freedrack Nelson said that as a result, Trump should send a clear message that Greenland is not for sale.
He told Sky News, “We don’t want to be American. No, we don’t want to be a Dennis. We want to be a Green Lander. And we want our own freedom in the future. And we want to make our own country with our own hope.”
What to know?
The Democratic Party came in first with 29.9 % of the vote in Tuesday. After that, 24.5 % was aggressively aggressively by Nilaraq, a pro -independence party. Nilraq supports close ties with the United States, but not to become Greenland to become an American territory.
Current governing parties were third and fourth with the center’s left -handed Investigatory and left -wing seams, 21.4 percent and 14.7 percent of the vote.
The strong results of the Democrat Party mean that it will have the opportunity to try to form a coalition government.
Trump has long expressed interest in the acquisition of Greenland, and earlier proposed the purchase of the area in 2019. He later reiterated his interest in November 2024 after the presidential victory.
Danish Prime Minister Matt Frederickson and Greenland’s outgoing Prime Minister Met Borip Egypt have repeatedly rejected Trump’s suggestions.
In January, Egdea said the Green Landers did not want to be “American”, while Frederickson insisted that “there should be respect for the sovereignty of the territories and the states.”
A survey conducted by the Danish newspaper Berlingsky and the Greenlandic Publication Sermon in January revealed that only six percent of the Greenlands are in favor of the US under sovereignty.
On the contrary, 85 % were against the idea, while nine percent said they did not believe. The survey took place between January 22 and 27 and included citizens of 497 Greenland over the age of 18.
What are people saying
Danish Prime Minister Matt Frederickson In a statement on Wednesday, the choice was “a happy day and a celebration of democracy.”
Danish Defense Minister Trails Lind Pollson According to Denmark’s Broadcaster DR, the Democrat congratulated the Democrat Party, saying that in the future, the Greenland government would “potentially deal with” US President Donald Trump’s major pressure “to tackle the widespread pressure of US President Donald Trump.
“It is not a matter that you can only contribute to the Danish circle – the future of Greenland is based on what the Greenland people and the government want,” he added.
Seth AbramsonAn American political columnist wrote on X, before Twitter: “Trump and Kasturi lost the elections in Greenland as much as you may lose elections in a country with which you have nothing to do and never.”
Dwen MenzManaging Director, Managing Director of Poor Research and Policy Initiative, told the Associate Press: “What point of view for independence will depend on that if the Democratic has decided to form a coalition government, and if so, with which party.”
What happens next
The Democratic Party will now try to form a coalition government with other parties in the coming days.
The result of these negotiations will almost certainly be the result of a government that opposes Greenland that becomes an American territory.
