New species described! Scientists unveil a fascinating find in Indonesia

Alex Barryman, a lead scientist and Red List officer at Bird Life International, explained: “The interesting discovery of separate differences in the three populations of Banda Mizomella suggested us to identify three species. In this post, we suggest that these species should be named after the islands in which they find: Banda Islands Mazomella, Babar Mazomella and Tanimber Mizomella (never said that experts lack imagination…). ” ‘

So how did these three species become likely? The island of Indonesia includes an amazing 18,000 islands, many of which have been isolated for millions of years. Since the species of the birds have made the new islands colonally shaped, their size, shape and plumage adapt to local residences and manufacture specific songs. Over time, the population changes so much from those on neighboring islands that scientists consider them separate species.

Thankfully, while these three mazomilla species have small boundaries, they have proved to be very compatible with residence breakdowns and are unlikely to talk about their dialogue. Sadly, this is not always the case. Many Indonesia’s local birds are struggling and more than 150 are considered a risk of extinction. Our partner, Indonesia, guides national efforts to tackle the threats posed by birds across the island, and to ensure that the amazing diversity of species can flourish in the coming decades.
