The Trump administration filed a lawsuit in a federal court in Chicago on Thursday, alleging that the laws of prohibition in Illinois, Chicago and Coke County were hindering the federal government’s ability to enforce immigration policies.
Chicago Mayor Brendon Johnson and Illinois Government JB Pratzkar, both Democrats, are named by the Chicago Police Department’s Superintendent Larry Steeling and other local elected officials in the third largest city in the country. It is believed to be a new legal action by the Trump administration against state and local officials, which tried to provide them with further assistance in federal immigration enforcement.
The litigation claims that the lack of cooperation with the federal enforcement of local and state officials’ immigration laws has resulted in “countless criminals in Chicago” who should have been subjected to deportation.
Illinois and Chicago have rules to restrict their cooperation with federal agencies’ efforts to deport non -documentary immigrants. The Illinois Trust Act, which prevents local law enforcement agencies from preventing immigrants from no judicial warrant, was signed by the Republican Government Bruce Runner in 2017.
In a statement, Mr Pratzkar said that the Trust Act has always been in accordance with the federal law and is still today.
“Illinois will defend our laws that prefer police resources to fight crime, while state law enforcement agencies help arrest violent criminals,” he said.
The mayor’s spokesman did not immediately comment on the legal action. A spokesman for the Chicago Police Department said the agency does not comment on the pending legal action.
The Justice Department said last month that it could prosecute state and city officials who refuse to help the administration carry out the immigration agenda. Thursday refused to comment on the case.
Immigrant policies, which are mostly removed from the local police departments, have been established in many liberal tilt cities to build trust with immigrant communities. Selected officials from many cities say policies help immigrants feel crime reports and easily interact with the Department of Health and Schools.
