3 Balochistan universities shut over ‘security concerns’ – Pakistan

QUETTA: Three Balochistan universities have stopped campus classes indefinitely and asked students to go to virtual classes.

The University of Balochistan, Sardar Bahadur Khan Women University and the University of Turbo have immediately suspended educational activities.

According to sources, the decision was taken in view of recent attacks and security threats.

The decision came a few days after the terrorists hijacked the Jaffar Express near Sibi. At least 26 hostages, including 18 security personnel, lost their lives in the attack.

Since then, there have been several attacks in Balochistan.

The decision was taken by the university administration after consulting with the heads of the deans and the educational departments.

A notification issued by the University of Balochistan states that a meeting has been convened with Dans and Section Heads, which has decided that all campuses will turn into virtual learning to more orders.

He did not offer any reason for the decision.

The notification states that faculty members have been instructed to use existing ID numbers to access the required digital resources and learning management system.

Following a statement issued by the University of Tribune, Vice -Chancellor Prof Dr Gul said in light of the “current situation”, the meeting decided to suspend educational activities and classes from Tuesday.

It added that the meeting was discussed and reviewed by a group of students, with the ongoing “illegal occupation and blockade” of the university’s administrative block, educational and administrative issues.

The statement added that the participants decided to stop the entry of the country and to protect the lives of employees and students living in the premises, along with university assets.

The statement asked the students to evacuate the hostel room within two days.

The Registrar briefed the meeting on March 13 about the “unauthorized occupation and the blockade of the administrative block”.

He explained that in response to the decisions of the Dispensary Committee, a group of students locked the entrance, showed a sit -in at the main gate, and prevented the staff from entering their offices.

The registrar said that the protest created significant difficulties for students, teachers and administrative staff, especially during the holy month of Ramadan.

In an attempt to resolve the situation through dialogue, the university March 13 formed a committee of senior faculty members, which met with protesting students.

A decision on educational activities is expected on Wednesday as exams are underway.
